Bersatu sacks Wan Saiful, suspends Wan Fayhsal

Bersatu has sacked its supreme council member Wan Saiful Wan Jan as well as four party division chiefs, and suspended its Machang MP Wan Ahmad Fayhsal Wan Ahmad Kamal for one term.

According to a Bersatu disciplinary board statement, it found the leaders guilty of violating the party constitution and its Code of Ethics and Conduct.

The sacked division chiefs are Azrudin Idris (Hang Tuah Jaya), Faizal Asmar (Pengerang), Fadhli Ismail (Ipoh Timur), and Isa Saidi (Ampang).

While the statement did not detail the violations, it is believed that Wan Saiful (above) and the four division leaders were expelled in connection with a recent attempt to pressure Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin into handing over party leadership to his deputy Hamzah Zainudin.

Wan Fayhsal, who had also come under party investigation, had previously denied involvement in the power play but did not reveal any details except that it had to do with "internal party matters related to the previous election.”

Under the anti-hopping law, Wan Saiful gets to keep his seat. He will now be an independent MP.

Appeal possible

However, the board said the party leaders can still file an appeal against the disciplinary actions.

"Bersatu members found guilty of violating party discipline and sentenced to disciplinary actions have the right to submit an appeal to the appeals board for consideration within 14 days.

"The disciplinary board has made its decision based on the investigations conducted and appropriate considerations, without any interference from other parties, independently, and without bias," it added.

Last week, it was reported that six Bersatu leaders were summoned to appear before the disciplinary board.

The leaders were called up over several allegations, including involvement in gathering statutory declarations (SDs) aimed at ousting Muhyiddin.

They were alleged to have collected SDs from Bersatu division chiefs nationwide to propose discussions on a leadership transition to Hamzah, who is the Larut MP and the opposition chief.

Additionally, the board was also investigating Wan Saiful’s remarks against party secretary-general Azmin Ali.

On Sept 25, the board had to postpone its proceedings involving several party leaders over the SD issue after failing to meet quorum due to the absence of a panel member.
